This guide focuses on VOD platforms in the independent film space. It is almost entirely for VOD, not linear channels, although as we have seen, AVOD and FAST channels are sometimes linked.
For general digital distribution news, please also subscribe to our Digital Distribution Guide Facebook Group and digital distributuion news will appear in your Facebook feed.
We are only listing VOD platforms here that, for the most part, are distinct streaming platforms, and not SVOD components of traditional, cable, premium cable, or subsciption broadcast channels, unless they are significant. Some of these platforms offer à la carte versions of their streaming services and do buy (or have bought) indies occasionally. Nevertheless, they are purposely left off this guide.
This tool is meant to be an evolving work-in-progress, and we will do our best to stay current in terms of new platforms popping up and others going dark. If you notice anything that should be corrected or added, or if you have any suggestions on how to improve this tool, please email us!

Technically, one could put this logo under every single platform, becuase it is possible for sales agents to negotiate directly with any platform, and often necessary when one is talking about exclusive licensing deals such as Originals, or premium deals such as Amazon’s Film Festival Stars program. But we are only putting this icon under platforms for which negotiating directly is really the only way to get on the platform.
Please note that there are platforms that ask that delivery and/or earnings go through an aggregator, even if the overall licensing deal is negotiated directlly. Some platforms, moveover, will refuse to negotiate with filmmakers directly, instead preferring an experienced Sales Agent, or Distributor.

Acorn TV is an American subscription video streaming service offering television programming from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, other Commonwealth countries, Ireland, Spain, and Mexico.
The platform offers a combination of new and classic mysteries, dramas, comedies, and documentaries. The service licenses content from producers and distributors including ITV, Channel 4, BBC Studios, All3Media, DRG, ZDF, and Content Media.
Acorn TV is operated by RLJ Entertainment, which also operates the Sundance Now and Urban Movie Channel streaming services. RLJ was acquired in 2018 by AMC Networks.

Anime Digital Network, abbreviated as ADN, is an Anime VOD platform, whose aim is to legally distribute Japanese animation series.
ADN was formed via a merger of KZPlay, belonging to Kazé, and Genzai, belonging to Kana Home Video. As a result of the merger, Kazé takes control of ADN. Kazé’s parent company is Viz Media Europe.
Some simulcast anime are broadcast 14 days after their broadcast in Japan to encourage television broadcast on French channels such as J-One or Mangas.

All 4 is an advertising video on demand service from the Channel Four Television Corporation. The service offers a variety of recent programs shown on Channel 4, E4, More4, Film4, 4Music, as well as exclusive programming such as foreign language titles from Walter Presents and Channel 4 Shorts. In 2020 Channel 4 entered a new licensing deal with the Walt Disney Company to distribute a variety of older 20th Century Fox programming.

Amazon’s Prime Video service includes both TVOD and SVOD, and is different from Amazon Originals, although all of these show up in their Apps. For films only available on Amazon as TVOD selections, one must rent or buy a film on Amazon.com and add it to one’s watchlist in order to watch the film in one of their Apps. TVOD territories are limited to the US, UK, Germany, and Japan. Films for English-speaking countries either have to be rated or a suggested rating needs to be provided, and localization for Germany and Japan is required.
One difference between DIY and going through an aggregator is that AVD will only accept episodic series for which full season episodes are submitted at once. If one wants to stagger the release of episodes within a season, one will have to submit the series through an aggregator, whose agreement with Amazon includes more flexible delivery options.

As of 2017, official selections at Tribeca and other A-list film festivals are extended a special invitation to become Amazon Video Direct Festival Stars, sometimes called Amazon Film Festival Stars, in which content producers who choose to self-publish through Amazon Video Direct, and give exclusive VOD rights to the platform, are eligible for an upfront bonus and enhanced royalties. This program seems to have been suspended as of 2019.
Rev share is going to be computed differently starting in 2020…it will be determined by something called “Customer Engagement Ranking,” with rates from 1¢ to 12¢ per hour, a big drop from a few years ago, where films could count on 15¢ per hour and films from the now-defunct Amazon Film Festival Stars program received 30¢. Additional, it is possible that certain studios are getting elevated hourly rates through specialty deals they have. In addition to the increased revenue, these companies also have bigger budgeted films and logarithms that will help to recommend and promote the film in ways that you could not do on your own.

AMC Theaters On Demand will offer about 2,000 films for sale or rent after their theatrical runs, just like other other video-on-demand retailers such as iTunes and Amazon do.
Hollywood’s five biggest movie studios—Disney, Warner Bros., Universal, Sony and Paramount—have made deals with AMC for catalog and new-release movies.
Films will cost roughly $3 to $5.99 to rent and $9.99 to $19.99 to buy.
Some theater chains in other countries already operate on-demand divisions (Cineplex in Canada, for example), but AMC is the first major exhibitor in the United States to do so.
On June 1, 2023, AMC Theaters On Demand moved to Vudu/Fandango in a new partnership.

As of November 1, 2019, iTunes is now the AppleTV App.
AppleTV was once the top TVOD platform, and perhaps still is for some content, but many people are watching on Amazon Prime Vidoo as well.
Apple has also integrated their originals on AppleTV+ into this App as well.
AppleTV+ is an SVOD add-on is available in 100 territories and costs approximately $5 per month.
Just one note about shorts: they are treated more like individual tv show episodes in the sense that one cannot rent them: they are for-purchase (EST) only at a fixed price of $2.99 HD / $1.99 SD. A workaround, especially for high-profile shorts, like Academy Award®-winners or nominees, is that they can be delivered as features in their respective genre categories (Documentaries, Drama, Animation, etc.).

Brown Sugar a companion SVOD service owned by Bounce TV, an American digital multicast television network that is owned by Katz Broadcasting, a subsidiary of E. W. Scripps Company.
The service launched in 2016 with 111 films, including Blacula, Cleopatra Jones, Foxy Brown, The Mack, Super Fly, and Shaft.
Brown Sugar content is narrower in scope than that of Bounce TV. Bounce TV’s original Programming features their flagship series Saints & Sinners and syndicated programming that includes The Wendy Williams Show, The Bernie Mack Show and A Different World. Bounce TV features programming geared toward an African American audience that skews older than the demographic that its cable competitor BET primarily targets (adults between the ages of 25 and 54, compared to BET's target demographic of youths and adults ages 12 to 34).
Other cable and satellite channels that service the African-American community include TV One, owned by Radio One, and Aspire, owned by Magic Johnson.

Canal VOD (formerly CANALplay VOD) is a pay-per-view service from CANAL+ that lets viewers rent or buy movies and series in a catalog of almost 20,000 titles. Rental is available for thirty days and 48 hours after the start of the first viewing. Purchases are available for life, and can also be accompanied by a DVD or Blu-ray delivered home.
CanalPlay (formerly CanalPlay Infinity, not to be confused with Canal VOD) is a French Internet service for the distribution of video files to the general public opened on November 8, 2011, first exclusively with SFR customers before extending to other connected devices on the market. The SVOD allowed access via smartphone, tablet and PC; another plan allowed total access to different media, including TV1. It included films from French and international studios, television series including leading American dramas, and kids programs.
Canal Plus Group shut down its subscription-based VOD service CanalPlay in 2019, after it saw its subscriber base plummet in late 2015 in the wake of Netflix’s debut.
In 2019, Canal+ closed a deal with Netflix to allow the SVOD giant to be on the French pay-TV platform as an additional option for Canal’s existing subscribers.

There is so much, and at the same time, so little to say about Netflix. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know what Netflix is, and how it works.
In terms of whether Netflix will license your U.S-based film, however, it’s important to realize that Netflix is taking fewer and fewer independent and festival film titles each year. Each month, around the 20th of the month, they put out a press release of what they are releasing in the coming month. If you take away TV shows, blockbuster or library titles from Studios, stuff for kids, and anything that was acquired as a Netflix original, the number of titles you are left with that have played at any prominent film festivals can perhaps be counted on just one hand, maybe two during certain months. Multiply that by the number of months in a year, and it’s really not that many titles.
Case in point: we have heard from one of the aggregators we work with that for monthly aggregator pitches, Netflix is no longer seeking material in the following genres: dramas, dramedies, comedies, and foreign language documentaries.
So what do we have left? genre (Thriller/Horror) and English-language documentaries?

Indeed, the name Quibi stands for “quick bites” of 10 minutes or less. Content displays at “full-screen” no matter how one holds his or her phone and falls into any of three buckets:
- Movies in Chapters: big stories told in chapters that are seven to 10 minutes in length.
- Unscripted Series and Docs: topics include food, fashion, travel, animals, cars, builds, music, sports, comedy, talk, variety and more.
- Daily Essentials: delivering the day’s news and information in five- to six-minute bites.
In the U.S., the service costs $4.99 a month with ads, or $7.99 without. (Any ads will be non-skippable and run six, 10 or 15 seconds long before each episode — or, about 2-1/2 minutes of ads for every hour of programming consumed.) The service appears also to be available in the U.K., but without the lower-tier option with ads.
