ABOUT THE PROJECT
LOGLINE
During WWII, when a secret friendship forms between a Japanese-American girl and a Mohave boy in Poston, Arizona, she must choose between her newfound love and life beyond Poston.
SYNOPSIS
Sumiko, a Japanese-American girl, lives on her family’s flower farm in California. Kids in school tease her for being Japanese, so she finds strength in her WEEDFLOWER. After Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, Sumiko, a Japanese-American girl, and her family are shipped to an incarceration camp in Poston, Arizona. Sumiko’s resilient spirit wanes under the harsh conditions, becoming as lifeless as her surroundings. When Sumiko explores the forbidden outskirts of the camp, she discovers it is built on the Mohave reservation. When she encounters a Mohave boy, Frank, she realizes how unwanted the Japanese are. He resents the camp’s placement on his tribe’s land and Sumiko is the target of his anger. As they learn about each other’s cultures, Sumiko and Frank build an unlikely friendship, and ultimately, fall in love. Life takes a turn when Sumiko is given the choice to finally leave the camp. She grapples with her newfound love for Frank and her potential life beyond Poston for she has now become as strong and beautiful as the WEEDFLOWER she has tended to and loved.
