ABOUT THE PROJECT
LOGLINE
TIMETRACKER follows Jack Powers, a brilliant 60-year-old man recently released from a 33-year federal prison stay, 22 of which were spent in solitary confinement. As the story unfolds, Jack navigates post-carceral life, wandering the American West in a rehabbed RV looking for a better life and a sense of peace with his past.
SYNOPSIS
In 1989 Jack received an extended sentence for interstate bank robbery. While in a supermax federal facility in Georgia Jack witnessed the extortion and murder of his cellmate. Fearing for his own life, Jack escaped. Several days later he was caught, attempting to visit his son. After embarrassing the prison with his historic escape the board of parole sought retribution. He spent the next 22 years of his life in solitary confinement.
During this unconscionable period of time, Jack wrote prolifically, lost his son, struggled with serious self-harm, and served as a key plaintiff in a monumental solitary reform civil case. Today, Jack is a reflection of all his life experiences—a reformed man, profound writer, mourning father, son, and critical voice in the solitary and prison reform movements.
In April of 2021 Jack was released. His initial re-exposure was documented in our short film, Tuesday Afternoon. In October 2021, he moved to California to live with and marry his longtime girlfriend, Jane. The two are currently in the process of rehabbing an RV where they live full-time with their puppy. Like many formerly incarcerated people, Jack is having trouble finding consistent work and is often met with skepticism and outright discrimination for the many tattoos he gave himself while incarcerated.
Our film will principally be an exploration of the manifestations of re-entry. We’ll accompany Jack as he seeks employment, goes through therapy, engages with the local homeless community, writes, goes on adventures with Jane, and attempts to elude the clutches of a prison industrial system designed to reincarcerate. However, we’ll also explore the question of what it means to re-enter emotionally. How does one reconcile the time lost? How does someone like Jack attempt to heal relationships, say goodbye to those he lost, and ultimately forgive himself?
