ABOUT THE PROJECT
LOGLINE
A new generation of drag kings is on the rise, despite the lack of representation on drag’s biggest stages. THE OTHER DRAG discovers the history and imagines a radical future in which kings step into the spotlight, creating paths of resistance, community and self-expression while blazing a path for a more inclusive and diverse drag culture.
SYNOPSIS
THE OTHER DRAG explores the untold history, present and bold future of drag kings, at a time of increasing anti-trans and drag laws and growing calls for greater equity and representation on drag’s biggest stages.
Today’s generation of drag kings is talented and liberated from the binary, embracing a gender-fluid self-expression and styling. Still, most people think that “drag” just means “drag queen,” and the highest paying, highest profile opportunities just don’t go to kings. This new generation of drag artists is determined to break through the glass ceiling in drag, while defining their own value as performers, artists and activists.
The film follows an ensemble of present day drag kings on the rise. Jax, a king from Montana, moves to Los Angeles to break into show business after facing discrimination in their first career as a teacher. Vico, a king originally from Puerto Rico, builds on a loyal fanbase from their appearances on Our Flag Means Death and Vida. LusTer and Julie, who organized the International Drag King Extravaganza, are determined to tell the story of the drag scene in the 90’s and secure the legacy of kings.
A portrait of female, non-binary and transmasculine performers, THE OTHER DRAG traces the history and explores the nuances of male drag from early days to the present. With never-before-seen archival, the film brings to life the once-thriving underground drag scenes across America and in-your-face take on male archetypes that parody and point to everyday misogyny and sexism, then and now.
From drag king director Larin Sullivan (The Young King) comes a definitive feature documentary that reveals untold histories, discovers new talent, and traces the trials and triumphs of drag kings on the verge of something big.
