ABOUT THE PROJECT
LOGLINE
Weaving together observational vignettes, SHIFTED LANDSCAPES examines the pervasive effects of the climate crisis on the environmental, cultural and psychological landscapes of California.
SYNOPSIS
SHIFTED LANDSCAPES explores the insidious impacts on fragile ecosystems and communities within California. Moving between a diverse range of stories across the state, the film’s artistic approach aims to create connection to spaces, communities, and landscapes. Voices of those most impacted by the climate crisis, including youth who will inherit this crisis caused by older generations, provide further means of reflection, acknowledging the psychological weight around this topic and providing an emotional core to the film.
Vignettes recur several times throughout the film, building a unique narrative arc as the film progresses, unfolding deeper dimensions and varying perspectives of that particular story:
In the Sierras, a fire lookout monitors the Sequoia National Forest; in Monterey, a group of divers smash invasive purple urchins with hammers, in an attempt to save the kelp population already decimated by warming waters; a scientist attempts to save a forest from bark beetle infestation using the beetles’ unique and eerie sounds against them; Tulare Lake, which was drained in the late 1800s, has suddenly reemerged due to the floods of 2023, to the celebration of the local Yokut tribe; in Humboldt county, a group of morel foragers look for the season’s pickings amidst the leftover debris of the fire season—mushrooms we will later see presented on the plates of diners at a Michelin starred restaurant.
