LOGLINE
An unexpected death amidst a wedding grips an Iranian-American immigrant family with a moral dilemma.
SYNOPSIS
RĀZ, a narrative short film set in present-day Los Angeles about an Iranian-American family, is a commentary on culture, loss and the lengths we go to protect the ones we love. Centered around the death of a family member on the eve of a wedding, the film observes rituals, familial structures and hierarchies, showing how loyalty, love and the deep bonds within a family unit can become oppressive when tragedy strikes. RĀZ shows how events can spiral out of control because of one misguided decision, how traumas are passed down, how the multitude of unspoken cultural guidelines undermine every action. Memory and multiple perspectives are woven together to create an intimate yet relatable story told in both Farsi and English. If confronted with a similar scenario, RĀZ poses the question: would I react the same way?
