ABOUT THE PROJECT
LOGLINE
Bringing the magic of cinema to the world’s youngest nation, South Sudan.
SYNOPSIS
South Sudan does not have a movie theatre. Yes, imagine that. There was a cinema district in Juba with a movie palace from during days of English Colonialism, but it has since been renovated into a church after years of being inoperable due to the second civil war. Streaming services, as the internet is hit or miss, are largely unavailable in the nation. The simple relief of going to theatre and escaping, does not exist. In the United States of America during the Great Depression, movies were a great sense of hope and necessary break from their bleak circumstances. Entertainment in South Sudan that can include the entire community-especially the youth- barely exists.
PANGEA UNDER THE STARS: JUBA aims to bring the cinema experience to South Sudan. A curated, international collective of professionals in a variety of industries and disciplines have assembled to utilize their resources and talent for social good and cultural exchange. The event will be open and gratis to the public (capacity pending). They seek to screen current, as well as classic films, and supplemental educational programming.
