    ABOUT THE PROJECT

    LOGLINE
    LEARNING HOW TO WEAR BLACK explores how choral voices—bound by the everyday sound scape of the city—can map the emotional, political, and historical textures of contemporary Black life, the work proposes listening as aform of architecture: a way of understanding how bodies, histories, and futures occupy space.

    SYNOPSIS
    What does it mean to roam the world in a satisfied way? What are borders? In our time, what does it truly mean to be alive and move freely—and how do we learn to live under the sun?

    What do we hear when we listen to Black life? When we reckon with the collective memories of a diasporic people.

    To listen to Black life is to recognize that we live within history; there is a certain comfort in knowing that others have preceded us. That they have navigated the fraught currents of the world we have inherited.

    Yet to listen may also be to lean forward into time. It might be to perceive ourselves “within the tense of possibility that grammarians refer to as the future real conditional or that which will have had to happen.”

    To listen, then, is to imagine the ways in which we reach towards unanticipated tomorrows. It is to imagine the ways we can hold, simultaneously, what is,what might be, and what must be.

    If Black life has a sound, it is a chorus; a composition shaped from moments grace and sorrow, struggle and kinship.

    Black life is a gaze. It is a way of seeing. Black life is a dream. It is to have a dream.

    Black life is the song we give voice to when we’re alone and when we’re together. The song we carry with us in stillness and in motion.

    The long song. The song without end.
