ABOUT THE PROJECT
LOGLINE
When two best friends transition from adolescence into adulthood they realize their aspirations are sending them in opposite directions.
SYNOPSIS
The film's title, FREEHOLD refers to a small town off the Northern coastline of New Jersey. It’s a predominantly upper middle class suburb where teenagers run wild; free to indulge in all the debaucheries afforded to them by their generous allowances. The film sifts through this webbed mess of designer drugs and meaningless sex in order to focus on the friendship shared between two young boys.
The protagonist, Zack, seeks to escape this blackhole of a town by following his Mother’s advice and doing everything in his power to gain admission to his dream school, Villanova. His friend Tristan does not share the same lofty ambition. While Zack is burdened by his innate sense of responsibility, Tristan remains free to live in the present comforted by his own impulses. They both long for the lives of one another, but are too caught up in their own ways to find a happy medium. This is depicted in three short vignettes, each referencing a crucial moment in their friendship.
As they grow and mature through adolescence, doing their best to survive all the pitfalls that come with it, they wind up learning that there is no right way or wrong way to go about life. Some strategies may prove more fruitful than others, however at the end of the day it’s about the relationships you make and the memories you share with those you love.
