LOGLINE
Following a devastating loss, a woman and her wife leave the city for a one-week stay at a lake house upstate. However, when she meets a mysterious woman who lives next door, her marriage, and her mind begin to unravel.
SYNOPSIS
At an Airbnb on beautiful but remote Echo Lake, Harper (30) and her wife, Nora (32), try to reconnect and heal following the devastating late-stage miscarriage of their first child. Harper is eager to move on and reluctant to truly process the death, whereas Nora struggles to get close enough to Harper to begin the joint healing process she knows they desperately need.
After spending a few days in tense isolation, Harper runs into a mysterious woman named Beck (30) who claims to have recently moved in nearby. Harper and Beck strike up a fast friendship, and Beck quickly becomes a confidant with whom Harper can safely process her emotions around the loss. Initially, Harper does not tell Nora about Beck out of fear that Nora will be hurt by Harper opening up to someone else. However, as Harper and Beck’s relationship begins to turn into something darker and more intimate, Beck’s existence becomes impossible for Harper to hide from Nora. Harper shares surface-level details about Beck and their dynamic, which is enough to make Nora uncomfortable. Nora asks Harper to stop seeing Beck, which Harper interprets as an act of jealousy and a reflection of Nora’s controlling nature, causing Harper to isolate from Nora and lean further into Beck. In doing so, Harper’s actions become increasingly erratic, risky, and dangerous and Beck’s power over Harper turns from friendly influence to complete manipulation.
By the end of the film, Beck has consumed Harper’s psyche, pushing her outside of any recognizable version of reality and forcing the grieving mother to the edge of the point of no return.
