ABOUT THE PROJECT
LOGLINE
Daughters follows three young girls as they prepare to dance with their Dads in prison, a rare prison rehabilitation program started by daughters with incarcerated fathers.
SYNOPSIS
In the feature documentary DAUGHTERS, we meet the young girls and fathers that partake in a prison rehabilitation program called “Date with Dad.” This program was created by Angela Patton, in the aim to empower young girls who wanted to invite their fathers back into their lives on their own terms.
The film follow the girls in their anticipation and preparation for the dance, as well as view the fathers in their 12-week fatherhood group therapy, a requirement to participate in the program. In a vérité way, the film exhibits what these young women are experiencing as a result of having a parent in jail. The girls are shown in their daily lives; at school, in their home life and extracurricular activities with their family and friends.
Through interviews with the children and parents, the film dives deeper into the adaptive skills these girls have developed. The girls bare the weight of losing a parent to mass incarceration. Above all, the excitement for the upcoming dance prevails, and the positive outcome of the culmination of the event is clear for both daughters and fathers alike.
