    ABOUT THE PROJECT

    LOGLINE
A bold new chapter in queer cinema history, BEYOND THE CELLULOID CLOSET traces three decades of LGBTQ+ representation, showing how film has reshaped culture, challenged stereotypes, and fueled the fight for visibility.

    SYNOPSIS
Since its premiere in 1995, The Celluloid Closet has enlightened and engaged millions with its provocative exploration of LGBTQ+ representation on the big screen, showing us how queer characters were pushed to the margins and cast as clowns, monsters, or tragic figures. The film exposed Hollywood’s homophobia, and inspired a generation of filmmakers to change the narrative.

Thirty years later, BEYOND THE CELLULOID CLOSET will examine the seismic shifts that have occurred since the release of the original film. Today, queer stories are everywhere—in independent film, mainstream blockbusters, streaming platforms, and even family entertainment—yet their presence has been hard-won and remains deeply contested. Cinema has become both a battleground and a mirror for queer identity, reflecting the progress of the LGBTQ+ community while also fueling the cultural conversations that continue to shape our lives.

BEYOND THE CELLULOID CLOSET will explore how the urgency of the AIDS crisis sparked a wave of queer storytelling in the early 1990s, how independent filmmakers refused to remain invisible, and how Hollywood eventually began to bring LGBTQ+ characters into the mainstream. It will highlight landmark films that opened doors while also raising new questions about authenticity, casting, and representation. It will also look at the explosion of trans visibility in film and television, as trans filmmakers and performers increasingly tell their own stories.

More than just a film history, BEYOND THE CELLULOID CLOSET is a celebration of community, resilience, and the transformative power of storytelling-and a reminder that the struggle over visibility is ongoing.
