SYNOPSIS:
As he celebrates his 85th birthday, with bravado and bewilderment in equal measure, renowned cartoonist and writer Jim Stevenson wryly credits his longevity—and “brilliance”—to the liberal consumption of peanut butter.
That may have something to do with—as a childhood friend speculates—the legacy of a mother who was a frightful cook. Or it might be Jim pulling our collective leg. James Stevenson had a stellar, 67-year career as a puller of legs. He was one of the New Yorker Magazine’s most prolific cartoonists—and arguably the most beloved.
STEVENSON – LOST AND FOUND is the candid and revealing film of his life and career as an artist, writer, father, husband and New Yorker, from celebrated documentarian Sally Williams (KEN DEWEY: This is a Test). Revered for its weighty commentary on world affairs, the New Yorker Magazine found its sweet side in the wit, whimsy and sheer joie de vivre of Jim’s illustrations, and articles. Starting there in 1947 as an 18 year-old pencil-sharpener-in-chief, he became a joke-writer, dreaming up gags for cartoonists to draw, graduating to the more lucrative drawing itself, and expanding into his own quirky brand of op-ed writing.
