This week (November 11-15) is National Apprenticeship Week… The Film Collaborative is helping ARTS2WORK to sign up as many employers and mentors as possible this week!
Arts2Work is a new creative workforce development initiative sponsored by The Alliance for Media Arts + Culture; it is the first federally-registered National Apprenticeship Program in Media Arts and Creative Technologies.
Think of Arts2Work as a jobs program for storytellers; for the first time, emerging filmmakers and creative technologists will have opportunities to get hired and learn on the job, be mentored by a veteran producer or editor, take classes during their Apprenticeship year, and advance in the company, or maybe even start their own.
Companies who sign on to hire and mentor an apprentice are eligible for grants and tax subsidies to offset their investment in training and mentorship— sometimes up to 75% of the first year's salary. This program is intended to give a leg up to low income communities, artists of color, women, youth, veterans, LGBTQ and disabled folks—emerging artists who often have big talent, and multiple barriers to careers in the industry.
Through Arts2Work, independent filmmakers can be acknowledged for the mentoring they often already provide, with an approved program that comes with benefits to support participation as well as opportunities to build capacity, abundance and access to new technology.
We’ve got to find a way to end the low and unpaid internships that predominate in our field— internships designed for folks who can afford to work for free and that perpetuate the inequity that persists from entry level to the highest levels of studio and corporate leadership.
Arts2Work is a program that can work with you to leverage millions of dollars in federal and state budgets for workforce development and Registered Apprenticeships that never go to the arts—until now.
