Dear Programmers:

We have three very exciting—and very eclectic—announcements for you for the coming Fall.

  • Fans and scholars of pop culture will devour QUEERING THE SCRIPT…a hip, nerdy, and revelatory look at the recent history of queer female representation on television. Featuring Ilene Chaiken (“The L Word”), Angelica Ross (“Pose”), Stephanie Beatriz (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), and of course, Lucy Lawless (“Xena, Warrior Princess”)!
  • Fans of Asian cinema (and we’re willing to bet folks who don’t see many Asian films as well) will flip out over this visually stunning debut feature by Leon Le. With heart-wrenching romance, glorious musical numbers and star-making performances, it’s no wonder that this film has won dozens of awards. Set in 1980s Saigon, SONG LANG tells the unlikely love story between a ruthless debt-collector and the male lead of a traditional Vietnamese opera company as they discover they are kindred spirits in a violent world gone mad.
  • And finally, for fans of campy horror, we are proud to offer you Halloween programming! Fresh from the announcement of its official world premiere at Fantastic Fest in September, SCREAM, QUEEN! MY NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is finally ready to be shown at a theater near you! Request a screener and join in the fun!
Please email us for screeners for these films or anything else on our slate at festivals@thefilmcollaborative.org.

All best,

ABOUT THE FILM:
Queerness on television has moved from subtext, in series such as “Xena: Warrior Princess,” to all-out multi season relationships between women, as seen on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Lost Girl,” and “Carmilla.” But things still aren’t perfect.

In 2016, a record number of queer women died on fictional shows, which broke the hearts of queer fans and launched a successful fight for better, more diverse LGBTQ2S+ representation. Stars such as Ilene Chaiken, Stephanie Beatriz, Lucy Lawless and Angelica Ross join with the voices of numerous kickass fangirls in this fast-paced history of queer women’s representation on contemporary television.

QUEERING THE SCRIPT not only charts the evolution of queerness, but also demonstrates the extraordinary impact of activism on its many diverse fans, ensuring that they see themselves accurately portrayed on screen.

Featuring interviews with Lucy Lawless (Actor, “Xena: Warrior Princess”), Ilene Chaiken (Producer/Director/Writer, “The L Word”, “The Handmaid’s Tale”), Princess Weekes (Journalist, The Mary Sue), Gloria Calderón Kellett (Producer/Writer, “One Day at a Time”), Angelica Ross (Actor, FX’s “POSE”), Stephanie Beatriz (Actor, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, The Light of the Moon), and many more.

ABOUT THE FILM:
Set in 1980s Saigon, well before the U.S. embargo on Vietnam was lifted in 1994, SONG LANG depicts a gritty underworld whose only source of brightness comes from the gorgeous stage productions of a local opera troupe.

A hunky, brooding debt collector forms an unlikely friendship with the charismatic lead actor of the struggling company, and their friendship, to their surprise, awakens feelings in both men.

“Song Lang” is a percussion instrument used to control tempo and phrasing in Vietnamese modern folk opera. In the Vietnamese language, it also means “two men.” It is the perfect homonym for a nearly perfect film.

This film is an outstanding achievement for first-time feature director Leon Le—who also voices the part of the lead actor in the opera!

To date, this film has racked up 25 awards in a wide variety of categories: best narrative feature, screenplay, cinematography, production design, costume design. Festivals in Asia have also recognized newcomer Lien Bahn Phat, who makes his acting debut in this film as the debt collector Dung ‘Thunderbolt,’ as a rising star.

ABOUT THE FILM:
At the time of release, The Advocate dubbed 1985’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge the gayest horror film ever made. For the film’s closeted young star, Mark Patton, such a tag was a stark reminder about the homophobia rampant in Hollywood at the time—and the painful experience he had making the high-profile film and living through the polarizing critical aftermath.

This new documentary highlights Patton’s time in the horror spotlight, and Patton—who co-produced the film with Roman Chimienti, a NYC-based sound engineer—sets the record straight about the controversial sequel, which ended his acting career just as it was about to begin.

SCREAM, QUEEN! MY NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET follows Patton as he travels to horror conventions across the U.S. Each new city unwraps a chapter from his life that is met with equal parts joyful and bittersweet detail, as he attempts to make peace with his past and embrace his legacy as cinema’s first male “scream queen.”

SCREAM, QUEEN! also finds Patton confronting the Freddy’s Revenge cast and crew for the first time, including co-stars Robert Rusler, Kim Myers and Clu Gulager, as well as Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund. The film also discusses Freddy’s Revenge’s status as an LGBTQ cult classic, and illustrates how the career turbulence experienced by Patton—whose résumé includes stints on Broadway and a regarded role in the 1982 film Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean—wasn’t out of the ordinary for the time. “There were plenty of gay actors like me,” says Patton. “They starred in one movie and just disappeared. A whole generation just vanished.”
