Dear Programmers:

The Film Collaborative is proud to announce our SXSW slate of four new films, now available to festivals and venues worldwide.

THE RIVER AND THE WALL is a uniquely relevant film…exploring the current political controversy around the Southern border from an environmental angle, while simultaneously thrilling us with adventure and intrigue. Add to this STRANGE NEGOTIATIONS, a musical journey to reconcile faith, politics and doubt by Brandon Vedder; VISION PORTRAITS, a confessional chronicle of visual impairment in the creative arts by Rodney Evans; and THE GARDEN LEFT BEHIND, a heartwenching narrative tale about an undocumented Latinx transwoman in New York City by Flavio Alves — and its fair to say that TFC is ready for SXSW we’ll never forget!

Please email us at festivals@thefilmcollaborative.org for screeners.

All best,

The Film Collaborative

theriverandthewall
ABOUT THE FILM:
THE RIVER AND THE WALL follows five friends on an immersive adventure through the unknown wilds of the Texas borderlands as they travel 1200 miles from El Paso to the Gulf of Mexico on horses, mountain bikes, and canoes.

Conservation filmmaker Ben Masters realizes the urgency of documenting the last remaining wilderness in Texas as the threat of new border wall construction looms ahead. Masters recruits NatGeo Explorer Filipe DeAndrade, ornithologist Heather Mackey, river guide Austin Alvarado, and conservationist Jay Kleberg to join him on the two-and-a-half-month journey down 1,200 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border.

They set out to document the borderlands and explore the potential impacts of a wall on the natural environment, but as the wilderness gives way to the more populated and heavily trafficked Lower Rio Grande Valley, they come face-to-face with the human side of the immigration debate and enter uncharted emotional waters.

strangenegotiations
ABOUT THE FILM:
An indie rock doc exploring the spiritual, artistic, and personal turmoil of musician David Bazan, set against America’s own crisis of faith highlighted by the 2016 presidential election.

After renouncing his long-held evangelical Christian beliefs and walking away from critically-acclaimed band Pedro the Lion, Bazan retreats into a solitary life of touring solo, struggling to rebuild his worldview and career from the ground-up, and trying to support his family of four. STRANGE NEGOTIATIONS finds David a decade into his journey, during which he has become a reluctant prophet of sorts to young Americans struggling to reconcile their faith, politics, and doubts amidst the 2016 elections.

visionportraits
ABOUT THE FILM:
VISION PORTRAITS is the personal story of filmmaker Rodney Evans (Brother To Brother, The Happy Sad) as he embarks on a scientific and artistic journey, questioning how his loss of vision might impact his creative future. Through illuminating portraits of three artists: a photographer, a dancer and a writer, the film looks at the ways each artist was affected by the loss of their vision and the ways in which their creative process has changed or adapted.

thegardenleftbehind
ABOUT THE FILM:
THE GARDEN LEFT BEHIND traces the relationship between Tina, a young Mexican trans woman, and Eliana, her grandmother, as they navigate Tina’s transition and struggle to build a life for themselves as undocumented immigrants in New York City.

As Tina begins the process of transitioning, Eliana struggles to understand Tina and fears that their life together in America is no longer what they bargained for. Tina finds camaraderie in a small but mighty transgender advocate group, but soon, Tina finds herself having to fight for the life that she’s meant to live—facing violent threats, seemingly insurmountable medical costs, questions about her legal immigration status, and increasing skepticism from the man she loves.

She begins to lose all hope, but has unknowingly become the only hope for a shy young man who has been watching her closely from afar.
