Dear Programmers:
Following spectacular premieres at Toronto, Telluride, AFI FEST and IDFA, Oscar®-nominated director James Longley (Iraq in Fragments) returns with his latest hard-hitting doc, ANGELS ARE MADE OF LIGHT. Now available for festivals and venues worldwide through The Film Collaborative, ANGELS ARE MADE OF LIGHT is a cinematic ode to Afghan civilians and their struggles through the viewpoints of multiple characters.
Also not to be missed is Daniel Laab’s shimmering and iridescent queer coming-of-age story JULES OF LIGHT AND DARK, newly available for festivals worldwide. Set in the isolation of rural Texas, JULES OF LIGHT AND DARK follows three central characters of different generations and identities as they strive to dull the debilitating silence of their small-town lives.

| | | | | | | | ABOUT THE FILM: Conceived as a cinematic ode to Afghan civilians, filmed over three years, ANGELS ARE MADE OF LIGHT traces the lives of young students and their teachers at a school in the old city of Kabul. Interweaving the modern history of Afghanistan with a present-day portrait of a working-class neighborhood, the film offers an intimate and nuanced vision. Moving seamlessly through the points of view of multiple characters—three brothers, their friends, parents, male and female teachers, an elderly cleaning woman at the school—the film allows their thoughts and ideas to play out on the grand stage of Kabul. Their memories of the Afghan kingdom, the communist revolution and the civil war are brought to life through rare 35mm archival material unearthed in Afghanistan.FESTIVALS 2018: Toronto International (World Premiere), Telluride, AFI FEST, IDFA FESTIVAL TERRITORIES The World EXHIBITION FORMATS DCP, Blu-Ray MORE INFO: AngelsAreMadeOfLight.com Email us for screeners or streaming links.

| | ABOUT THE FILM: In present-day Texas, Maya (Tallie Medel) and her on again, off again girlfriend Jules (Betsy Holt) total their car after a night of backwoods raving and teen mischief. They’re rescued from the wreckage by Freddy (Robert Longstreet), a divorced oil worker whose stoic facade crumbles as he comes to see himself, and his repressed desires, in Maya. As Jules recovers, Maya and Freddy develop a rapport that dulls the debilitating silence of their small-town lives. Together, they subtly encourage one another to chase after what they want the most (or at least figure out what that might be).
JULES OF LIGHT AND DARK is an iridescent coming-of-age story boasting the rural isolation of Deb Shoval’s AWOL and the wanderlust of Andrea Arnold’s AMERICAN HONEY. Defined by earnest, full performances and a blue palette, Daniel Laabs’ first feature solidly articulates the universality of queer loneliness and uncertainty across genders and generations.FESTIVALS 2018: New Orleans Film Festival (World Premiere) FESTIVAL TERRITORIES The World EXHIBITION FORMATS DCP, Blu-Ray MORE INFO: julesoflightanddarkmovie.com Email us for screeners or streaming links. | |
