Dear Programmers:
We’re proud to once again be working with filmmaker Yen Tan (Pitstop), on his 2018 SXSW narrative 1985, which premiered just a couple of weeks ago. This film is a slow burn with an exceptional payoff, which will leave you emotional to say the least.
We are thrilled that we are finally able to tell you that EVERY ACT OF LIFE will premiere at Tribeca next month. The film chronicles the incredible life and work of pioneering gay playwright Terrence McNally…
We are also excited about SHAKEDOWN, which just premiered at the 2018 Berlinale Panorama. This is a glimpse into a world few knew existed, and will likely shock you…in a very good way!
And finally for now, we are reminding you of the 2018 Sundance U.S. Doc Special Jury Award-winning CRIME + PUNISHMENT. This one is performing amazingly already (definitely one of the hottest bookers of the year at all the top festivals)…so you need to check it out!
Please email us at festivals@thefilmcollaborative.org for screeners. Enjoy!

ABOUT THE FILM:
‘Shakedown’ was a series of parties founded by and for African American women in Los Angeles that featured go-go dancing and strip shows for the city’s lesbian underground scene. Inspired by transwoman Mahogany who, as the mother of the scene, presided over queer strip shows and balls for non-heterosexual audiences in the 1980s, butch Ronnie Ron created, produced and presented the new shows. In them, the largely female clientele from the ‘hood’ slipped dollar notes into lap dancers’ panties while celebrating lesbian sexuality to pulsating hip-hop beats.
Showing the protagonists backstage and in interviews, this intimate chronicle reveals that ‘Shakedown’ was more than just a strip club; as one of the few spaces for lesbian subculture, the club brought together and galvanized a community of freaks and queers of color, and for that it suffered police reprisals. The film’s director is herself a member of this community; using exclusive archive material, posters and flyers, her film takes a personal look at female desire that is rarely presented on the big screen.

ABOUT THE FILM:
Amidst a landmark class action lawsuit over illegal policing quotas, CRIME + PUNISHMENT intimately observes the real lives and struggles of a group of black and Latino whistleblower cops known as “The NYPD 12” and the young minorities they are pressured to arrest and summons in New York City.
Over four years of unprecedented access, the film cinematically exposes the interconnected stories of systemic injustice in New York City policing through the bold efforts of a group of active duty officers, an innocent young man stuck in Rikers and one unforgettable private investigator. They bravely risk their safety, careers and livelihoods to bring light to harmful policing practices which have plagued the precincts and streets of New York City for decades.
