ABOUT THE FILM:
A SUITABLE GIRL follows three young women in India struggling to maintain their identities and follow their dreams amid intense pressure to get married. Ritu, Dipti and Amrita represent the new India. Educated, financially stable and raised with a mix of traditional and contemporary values in the urban cities of Mumbai and New Delhi, they have access to the world in ways their mothers did not. Yet their lives take a dramatic turn when the pressure to settle down and get married hits. Career aspirations become secondary to the pursuit of a husband, and the women struggle with the prospect of leaving their homes and families to become part of another.
Documenting the arranged marriage and matchmaking process in vérité over four years, the film examines the women’s complex relationships with the institution of marriage and the many nuanced ways society molds them into traditional roles and makes it nearly impossible to escape.

“A Suitable Girl is an overwhelming testament to the power of patriarchy and the continued struggle of women to gain agency over their lives—and the many power structures that conspire to restrict their movement, their sexuality and their life choices.”

“With A Suitable Girl, Filmmakers Sarita Khurana & Smriti Mundhra have achieved what many documentarians can only attempt, taking a topic that many outsiders misunderstand and laying it beautifully bare. In this case, the subject of arranged marriages has become increasingly controversial to the Western world over time, as women have rightfully embraced their independence and released the ties of tradition. In this film, we meet several of these contemporary women, all of whom relish their greatness as individuals while acknowledging the importance of tradition to their identities. A Suitable Girl challenges conventions and reveals truthful portraits of its central subjects with beautiful cinematography, compelling characters, and a gorgeous score from Gingger Shankar.”

ABOUT THE FILM:
ARMISTEAD MAUPIN examines the life and work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, following his evolution from a conservative son of the Old South into a gay rights pioneer whose novels have inspired millions to claim their own truth.
Jennifer Kroot’s documentary about the creator of Tales Of The City moves nimbly between playful and poignant and laugh-out-loud funny. With help from his friends (including Neil Gaiman, Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Sir Ian McKellen and Amy Tan), Maupin offers a disarmingly frank look at the journey that took him from the jungles of Vietnam to the bathhouses of 70’s San Francisco to the front line of the American culture war.

ABOUT THE FILM:
Grand Rapids, Michigan has gotten more people to pay attention to art. MORE ART UPSTAIRS follows four accomplished artists as they compete at ArtPrize, a populist experiment that’s challenging the art world’s hierarchy by giving the public the power to decide which art will win almost half the $500,000 in prize money.
For three weeks in September, hundreds of thousands of people flock to Grand Rapids to engage in beer-fueled debates in the bars of one Michigan town aren’t about sports, politics, or business—they’re about art.
With unmatched access to artists, organizers, jurors and visitors, this excellent film captures the entire wild ride of the ArtPrize competition. It’s a thoughtful yet exuberant experience about this curious confluence of paintings, populism and the notion that art can express something important about what it means to be human.
