Since its premiere in January at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, followed by a Teddy Award for Best Queer Film at the Berlin International Film Festival, and Centerpiece screenings this summer at the Toronto, San Francisco, and Los Angeles LGBT Film Festivals, Keep the Lights On has become the most acclaimed gay-themed film of the year.

But even a film as well received as this one will not survive in the marketplace—and not send word that queer cinema is a viable alternative in our cinemas—without the help of LGBT organizations like yours.

From New Queer Cinema veteran Ira Sachs, Keep the Lights On is an emotionally and sexually charged journey of two men in New York City through love, friendship, and addiction. What starts as a casual encounter develops into a deeper connection that spans a decade. Keep the Lights On is a film that has people talking long after the closing credits roll, by offering a rare depiction of the reality of gay love and life as we live it in America today.

As an important organization in the LGBT community, we are asking for your assistance in helping us promote and support this valuable film to your members. The film will be opening September 7 in select cities, and we are looking for community partners to promote the film as well as host special “night out” events that can serve as both social gatherings for your organization, as well as a new mode of support of queer cinema in our lives.

Our goal is to create a new—and very simple—grassroots model, that we hope will pave the way for new queer cinema in years to come. But we need your help! If Mel Gibson can turn out the hordes for Passion of the Christ, we need to show that the LGBT community is there to support the telling of our stories as well. If you are interested and able, we’d love to discuss your involvement further. We have a number of different suggestions as to how organizations can participate, and we promise we'll make involvement easy!

Please be in touch with Bryan Glick at bryan@thefilmcollaborative.org.

We hope to hear from you soon, and share our ideas with you more fully.

With warm regards,

Jeffrey
