“Stunned by WE WERE HERE. Beyond powerful, yet ends in message of hope & humanity. Stupendously moving.”
— Shawn Levy,
The Oregonian
“One of the standout films at …Sundance…a powerful snapshot of a time in American history that few are fully aware of.”
— Peter Knegt, indieWIRE
“WE WERE HERE is absolutely electrifying. I wept, sure, but mostly from relief that this story has finally been told with all its dimensions intact: the panic, the betrayals, the brave humor, the enormity of what we lost yet, ultimately, affirmed for the ages. It’s a love story about the resilience of our tribe.”
— Armistead Maupin
“A frank, no-frills account of the AIDS crisis as seen from ground zero — San Francisco’s gay Castro Street district circa 1980 — WE WERE HERE documents the epidemic through a powerful combination of first-hand testimony, archival photography and TV news footage.”
— Peter Debruge, Variety
“WE WERE HERE brings a rewardingly fresh and personal perspective to the subject. While the tears shed will be shared by audiences watching the movie, this is a rare AIDS movie that is affirmative rather than depressing.”
— Stephen Farber,
The Hollywood Repoter
“It’s fucking perfect.”
— Cleve Jones, founder AIDS Memorial Quilt.
We Were Here
ABOUT THE FILM:
WE WERE HERE is the first documentary to take a deep and reflective look back at the arrival and impact of AIDS in San Francisco. From the team that created THE COCKETTES, WE WERE HERE explores how the City’s inhabitants were affected by, and how they responded to, that calamitous epidemic. Though a San Francisco-based story, WE WERE HERE extends beyond San Francisco and beyond AIDS itself. It speaks to our capacity as individuals to rise to the occasion, and to the incredible power of a community coming together with love, compassion, and determination.
