TFC September 2019 Newsletter

Would you like to be the subject of a TFC Case Study?

This section is usually reserved for reminders about new blog posts. Well, we don’t have any to offer up right now, but that is about to change, big time!

As many of you know, TFC was awarded a grant by the very generous Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) (thanks again HFPA!) to support our online education tools related to distribution, including the TFC Blog, Digital Distribution Guide, etc.

To that end, we are looking for a few filmmaking teams (for films distributed in 2018 or 2019) to be interviewed for a deep dive into their distribution journey. What worked and what didn’t, from festivals (premiere and distribution), educational, theatrical, and digital distribution, to marketing, publicity, social media and impact—whether you sold your rights or did DIY or some kind of hybrid…all that applies to your film or series (fiction or documentary), and with as much transparency as possible. We will pay an honorarium, and if you want to be anonymous, we can discuss that too.

If you are interested, please either send us an email to this special address: casestudy@thefilmcollaborative.org, or use our submission form and check the “Be a Case Study” box and fill out as much information as you can. (Your responses will not be in the case study itself—it’s just so that we can learn about your film, espcially if we are not working with you already. If we choose your project, there will be a uniform list of specific questions we’ll have you address, at a later date).

TFC has done a number of Case Studies in the past, such as Intelligent Lives, The Light of the Moon, and Tab Hunter Confidential, a few that were presented at conferences (A Suitable Girl, Landfill Harmonic, The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin), as well as our Two Case Study Books (Selling Your Film Without Selling Your Soul and Selling Your Film Outside the U.S.). While some of the content of these studies is no longer applicable in 2019, much of it is still very relevant—especially in the areas of financing and building an audience. We are aiming to do at least five (5) more case studies by this coming Spring, to provide the most current information to filmmakers in this ever-evolving distribution landscape.

We look forward to hearing from you!

New Festival Titles

TFC recently announced three very exciting—and very eclectic—titles for our festival distribution program:

queering_the_script Queering the Script

A hip, nerdy, and revelatory look at the recent history of queer female representation on television. Featuring Ilene Chaiken (“The L Word”), Angelica Ross (“Pose”), Stephanie Beatriz (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), and of course, Lucy Lawless (“Xena, Warrior Princess”)!

song_lang Song Lang

Set in 1980s Saigon, well before the U.S. embargo on Vietnam was lifted in 1994, SONG LANG depicts a gritty underworld whose only source of brightness comes from the gorgeous stage productions of a local traditional Vietnamese opera troupe. Winner of 25 awards and counting, this film is an outstanding achievement for first-time feature director Leon Le—who also voices the part of the lead actor in the scenes of the opera performance!

scream_queen Scream, Queen!
My Nightmare on Elm Street

At the time of release, The Advocate dubbed 1985’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge the gayest horror film ever made. For the film’s closeted young star, Mark Patton, such a tag was a stark reminder about the homophobia rampant in Hollywood at the time—and the painful experience he had making the high-profile film and living through the polarizing critical aftermath.
