Dear Collaborators,

This month, we celebrate our films old and new, with a flurry of member updates, including a few EMMY NOMINATIONS and AWARDS/GRANTS, a filmmaker reception at Outfest next week, as well as our usual blog post updates and news that you may have missed.

All best,

— The Film Collaborative

New Blog Posts

Marketing your film via social media is not free! We can’t think of a better person to explain why than our Director of Digital Marketing, Sheri Candler, who has recently posted a five-part series on social media basics for filmmakers, which highlights the most used platforms: BasicsMythsFacebookTwitterYouTube.

Orly Ravid was quoted last month in Indiewire about the harmful side-effects of guarding information. We consistently suggest to filmmakers that they gauge their expectations against how well similar films have performed, but until the folks collecting the money are more forthcoming, we find staff member Bryan Glick’s blogs, which track both TFC films as well as those at every major film market, a very good start. Read about TFC Documentaries and TFC Narrative Films, as well as a Distribution Report from Cannes films from 2012.

TFC Filmmaker Reception @ Outfest 2013

outfestinvite

We are thrilled to be working with so many high caliber films at Outfest this year. From selections from Sundance to Berlin to SXSW to Tribeca and beyond, we are proud to honor our TFC filmmakers @ Outfest 2013 with a reception on Wednesday, July 17 at 5:30pm in the DGA Atrium.

Please join us for drinks and light refreshments to celebrate these films and to ask our staff about TFC’s latest initiatives: fiscal sponsorship, digital distribution, and TFC Legal™.

TFC On Location

TFC’s Director of Digital Marketing, Sheri Candler, will be in Atlanta on July 27 for a workshop on how to plan the marketing and distribution of your work. More information on that session here.

News You May Have Missed

  • For niche documentaries, it is imperative to get your film in front of the right audience, not just the right film festival. This case study shows how one indie producer made the effort to screen her film to those who would be the most excited to see it as a lead in to her theatrical release.
  • If social change is the goal of your film, non theatrical screening tours can be the best way to get your film to its audience. But building relationships and planning well in advance for such a tour is essential in order to see success. Here’s how one film pulled it off.
